There are times when you need to take those short-term positions just to make ends meet, but then you later feel like you can no longer get back to a full-time or permanent employment. Employers would think that you are a job-hopper who just can’t keep a job for a long time. According to a study, five or more job changes within ten years trigger managers to raise the red flag.
In the view of managers, the economy’s downturn causes disruptions for employees. They can only understand your series of short positions you have included on your resume if you are able to represent them effectively.
Let’s say you are an engineer who is faced with a situation where you felt like you are getting shorter and shorter positions. Such a case is troubling given that in a three to a six-month position, it will take you a month or more to land a new job. Even more so if you have to arrange living accommodations in a new town. A scenario such as this will definitely cost you more, and you get to earn less as a result.
What you have to do is to change or rewrite the wording of the objective you’ve included in your resume. Make it a ”contract-to-direct” point-of-view. This “new” objective suggests that you were only a worker by contract.
You may need to rework your work experience as well. This can be done by grouping all of your short term jobs under the ‘Contract Work” heading to make it look like a single job entry. This small change can already make a difference as it allows you to highlight the best features of your set of work. Also, this helps de-emphasise parts that you don’t want your employers to care.
You can also try a different approach -- develop a functional resume that characterises the types of work on the first part and then have the work history in the last part. For example, divide your resume into two parts. Have the first part be labelled as “Professional Experience” and then provide the types of work you have faced before including a detailed description followed by your test work. On the second part, add “Work History”. Include in it the names of your employers and the dates of when you were employed.
